Catch More Walleye

If you are serious about becoming a better walleye fisherman, You should consider the following, One of the most important things you can do to prepare yourself is to obtain a topographical map of body of water you intend to fish. The studying you can do from the comfort of your own couch is equally if not more important than what you do once you hit the ice or open water.

By checking over a map you can easily elminate 3/4's of area that probably will not concentrate much fish. The spots that will produce most of the fish are pretty easy to identify. A good spot to consider is a breakline that is nearby deepwater. A dropoff can be spotted by looking for the lines on the map that are close together. The closer together the lines the steeper the drop will be.

Finding Walleye You didn't know were there

Points, inside turns, and flats are all easy to spot if you take a few minutes to study. I have done alright fishing certain points, breaklines and weed edges. However a few years back I dug up a map to the lake I have fished for many years, and I noticed something I missed.

I found a spot that had the makings of a combination of certain key ingredients. In front of this particular lakes largest flat was a huge inside turn, witin the turn was one of the steepest dropoffs that led directly to the lakes basin (some of the deepest water the lake has to offer)

When I scouted the area with an aquaview I found a distinct weededge in about 17 foot of water.

I set up right off the edge of the weeds, and this spot produced very well. I caught several walleye throughout the ice season including a seven pound fish.

So when looking at a map try to identify more than one key ingredient. Some people think that walleye fishing is luck. Smarter people know that fishing is about 5% luck and 95% preparation and execution.

Just like in life knowledge is power, the same applies to fishing. When I began to take a serious approach to walleye fishing by reading every arcticle and book I could get my hands on I immediatly started catching more fish, and you can too.
